Marijuana and CBD have been increasing in popularity in recent years for the treatment of a variety of health issues. In particular, CBD may be effective at relieving the symptoms of insomnia.

What Is CBD?

CBD is a cannabinoid, a chemical compound found in marijuana that binds or attaches to certain receptors in the central nervous system and acts as a chemical messenger. The two most well-known cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid responsible for creating a euphoric, or “high”, feeling.

Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a psychoactive effect, so you do not feel the high associated with THC. CBD does, however, help some people relieve certain conditions, such as insomnia, anxiety, and pain.

How Does CBD Work?

Much is still unknown about how cannabinoids, including CBD, work. Research shows that CBD interacts with cells and proteins in the brain. To better understand how CBD works, it is helpful to understand the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The endocannabinoid system is a complex cell-signaling system that plays a role in regulating an array of internal functions and processes, such as sleep, memory, appetite, mood, and fertility. Regardless of whether you use cannabis or not, the endocannabinoid system is present and active in your body.

The endocannabinoid system involves three core components:

  • Endocannabinoids: Molecules made by your body to help keep internal functions running smoothly.
  • Endocannabinoid receptors: Found mostly in the peripheral nervous system or central nervous system. Endocannabinoids bind with these receptors to communicate that the ECS needs to act.
  • Enzymes: Responsible for breaking down endocannabinoids once they have fulfilled their function.

While it isn’t fully known how CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, we do know that it doesn’t bind to the endocannabinoid receptors in the same way as THC. It may prevent the break-down of endocannabinoids, allowing them to have a greater effect on your body, or it may bind with an as-of-yet-undiscovered receptor.

In summary, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which may affect the sleep cycle. It may also decrease pain and anxiety, which can both inhibit restful sleep.

Forms of CBD

CBD can be extracted in an oil form from either the marijuana or hemp plants. Restrictions on CBD oil vary, depending on state laws. In some states, CBD can be sold legally if all THC is removed. In states that have legalized marijuana, CBD can be sold whether it contain THC or not.

Depending on your state’s laws, you may require a doctor’s prescription to obtain CBD. CBD oil can be placed under the tongue, or infused with products such as:

  • Tinctures: In this form, a few drops of CBD liquid can be added to drinks.
  • Vaping: Using a vape pen or other vaporizer, CBD extract is heated, creating a vapor that is inhaled.
  • Edibles: A variety of CBD-infused edibles are available as cookies and gummy treats.

CBD oil comes in various levels of concentration. It may take some trial and error to determine what dosage works best to treat your sleep issues.
